Matthew, ZECNT by Grant Osborne

As a pastor, I spend a good portion of my time reading books. I used to think it was important to read everything I could get my hands. I used to spend hours reading every single commentary in my library on a passage before I would preach. Due to time constraints, I now try to read the best commentaries rather than the most.

The term "commentary" is vague in the world of Christian publishing. Commentaries may refer to what really amounts to printed sermons or to an overly technical documents written primarily for the scholastic world. However, the most helpful and best commentaries to me are those that combine the technical, theological, and sometimes applicable details. From what I have read, Grant Osborne's commentary on Matthew fits that category. I appreciate what I have read thus far. It is a commentary that engages both the mind and heart. It is one of the first commentaries that I will be pulling from the shelf when I preach from Matthew's Gospel. I look forward to adding the other commentaries from the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament to my library.
